My name is Shaun Michels. I have been writing professional resumes and cover letters for about ten years. I’ve had the incredible opportunity to help lots of people get jobs. This is what I do best and enjoy most. I love to help my clients get great results! During this time I discovered why it’s getting so hard to get job interviews. There are so many barriers between you and the hiring manager. The Applicant Tracking Systems (commonly known as ATS) like Taleo or PeopleSoft is the first barrier. Many people fear these computer software programs that have been created to filter through thousands of resumes. Did you know up to 95% of job applications are eliminated by the ATS? I am here to tell you now DO NOT fear the ATS.Take your time and complete every application for carefully and completely. Copy and paste your resume content if you need to. You also need to learn secret of how to increase your chances of being found. The real secret is you must be an ACE candidate.
So what is an ACE candidate? Simply put it is a candidate who meets ALL the minimum requirements. I will repeat that, someone who demonstrates with their resume and cover letter that they meet ALL the minimum requirements. The ATS will compare your job application to the position description to match keywords and keyword phrases. The better your application matches the higher you rank in the ATS search results. What do you need to do? You need to optimise your resume and cover letter with keywords and keyword phrases used in the position description or job advertisement to be an ACE candidate. There is more to “ACE” than meets the eye. It’s actually an acronym with A for Abilities, C for Competencies and E for Experience. Your abilities are your soft and hard skills, your competencies are you education, training, inductions, tickets and licences, and your experience is well your work experience. If your resume and cover letter clearly demonstrates that you have all the relevant skills, experience and qualifications for the job you applied for you will be an ACE candidate.
If you do not meet all the minimum requirements, you will not be considered an ACE candidate by the ATS. You will appear below every ACE candidate found in the search results. This does not mean your resume will never be found. If you optimise your resume and cover letter as must as possible you are increasing your chances of being found. Here is the reality check. In most cases, you really need to be in the top 20 resumes found in the ATS to be considered. I know the ATS will by default return the best 300 resumes matching the position description. No recruiters have time to read 300 resumes for one position. And there is your next barrier, the Recruiters! The recruitment agencies are competing for the same jobs you want, so they can make nice commissions on placing you into the role. If a recruiter finds and views your resume in the ATS you have less than 10 seconds to convince them you are a suitable candidate. A recent study by The Ladders in the US found recruiters spend on average just 6.25 seconds viewing a resume. You Must Convince Them Almost Instantly!
If you survive the first pass, the recruiter will look at page 2 of your resume. If they like what they read you will get that a phone call for an interview. Convince the recruiter you have what the employer is looking for and you will be recommended to the hiring manager for a second interview. The hiring manager will review your resume and decide if they want to interview. If you resume demonstrates everything the hiring manager wants, you will get that interview. It’s important to maintain good relationships with recruiters. After all, the recruiter will only recommend candidates who meet their strict brief from the hiring manager in order to preserve their credibility and reputation. Once you are in the room with the hiring manager it’s up to you to convince them you are the right person for their team. They already know you have the relevant skills and experience, what they really want to know is that you are the right person for their team.
If you are the best fit for the team you will get that job.
Kind regards,
Shaun Michels
